Patterns

HUNTER IN HAND

The horses will approach the Judging area (A) and set up for inspection in the “open” position (ie with all four (4) legs of the horse visible by the judge standing on either side of the horse). The judge shall inspect each horse from the front, rear and both sides. At the judge’s request, the horse will walk the small triangle ABCA. The horse will continue on at a trot following the large triangle ADEA. At the completion of the judging, the handler will lead the horse away from the judging area promptly.

LUNGE LINE

Horse is walked to 1st cone and pause for conformation inspection. After inspection, horse is trotted around 2nd cone to the side of the arena. Stop, retire to end of arena to wait for lunging demonstration.

RANCH RIDING Pattern 1

  1. Walk
  2. Trot
  3. Extend the trot, at the top of the arena, stop
  4. 360 degree turn to the left
  5. Left lead ½ circle, lope to the centre
  6. Change leads (simple or flying)
  7. Right lead ½ circle
  8. Extended lope up the long side of the arena(right lead)
  9. Collect back to a lope around the top of the arena and back to centre
  10. Break down to an extended trot
  11. Walk over poles

  9. Walk from 9 to 10 – 9 metres
  10. Stop and back at 10 – approx. one horse length

RANCH VERSATILITY REINING Pattern 1

Mandatory markers along fence or Wall. The Judge shall indicate with markers on arena fence or wall the centre of the pattern.
Ride pattern as follows: Trot to centre of arena and stop.

  1. Complete 3 spins in one direction. Hesitate
  2. Complete 3 spins in the opposite direction. Hesitate.
  3. Beginning on right lead, complete two large fast circles to the right. Change leads at centre of arena
  4. Complete two large fast circles to the left. Change leads at centre of arena.
  5. Begin a large circle to the right but do not close this circle. Run down the right side of the arena past the centre marker and do a left rollback at least 6 metres from the wall, no hesitation.
  6. Continue back around the previous circle but do not close this circle. Run down left side of arena past centre marker and do a right rollback at least 6 metres from wall, no hesitation.
  7. Continue back around previous circle, but do not close this circle. Run down right side of arena past centre marker and do a sliding stop at least 6 metres from the wall. Back up at least 3 metres. Hesitate to show completion of pattern.

RANCH VERSATILITY REINING Pattern 2

Mandatory Markers along wall. The Judge shall indicate with marker on arena wall the centre of the pattern.
Ride pattern as follows: Trot to centre of arena and stop or walk before departure.

  1. Beginning on right lead complete two circles to the right, the first one large and fast, the second small and slow. Stop at centre.
  2. Complete 4 spins to the right. Hesitate.
  3. Beginning on left lead complete two circles to the left, the first one large and fast, the second small and slow. Stop at centre.
  4. Complete 4 spins to the left. Hesitate.
  5. Beginning on right lead complete a large fast circle to the right and change leads at centre of arena. Complete a large fast circle to the left and change leads at centre of arena.
  6. Begin a large fast circle to the right, but do not close this circle. Run down the right side of arena past centre marker and do a left rollback at least 6 metres from wall.
  7. Continue back around previous circle but do not close this circle. Run down left side of arena past centre marker and do a right rollback at least 6 metres from wall.
  8. Continue back around previous circle but do not close this circle. Run down right side of arena past centre marker and do a sliding stop at least 6 metres from wall. Back up at least 3 metres. Hesitate to show completion of pattern.

RANCH VERSATILITY REINING Pattern 3

Judge shall indicate with mandatory markers on arena wall the centre of the pattern and place markers on wall at least 15 metres from each end of arena.
Ride pattern as follows: Trot to centre of arena and stop or walk before departure. Start pattern facing toward the Judge.

  1. Beginning on right lead, complete three circles to the right – the first two large and fast; the third one small and slow. Change leads at centre of arena.
  2. Complete three circles to the left – the first two large and fast, the third one small and slow. Change leads at centre of arena.
  3. Begin a large circle to the right, but do not close this circle. Run down centre of arena, past end marker, and do a sliding stop.
  4. Complete 3 ½ spins to the right.
  5. Run up centre of arena to the opposite end, past end marker, do a sliding stop.
  6. Complete 3 ½ spins to the left.
  7. Run back to middle of arena, past centre marker and do a sliding stop. Back up at least 3 metres. Hesitate to show completion of pattern.

RANCH VERSATILITY REINING Pattern 4

Judge shall indicate with mandatory markers on arena wall the centre of the pattern and place markers on wall at least 15 metres from each end of arena.
Ride pattern as follows:

  1. Run up centre of arena past end marker and do a sliding stop.
  2. Complete 3 ½ spins to the left.
  3. Run down to opposite end of arena, past end marker and do a sliding stop.
  4. Complete 3 ½ spins to the right
  5. Run past centre marker and do a sliding stop. Back at least 3 metres. Complete ¼ turn to the left; hesitate.
  6. Beginning on right lead, complete two circles to the right – the first one small and slow, the second one large and fast. Change leads at centre of arena.
  7. Complete two circles to the left – the first one small and slow, the second one large and fast. Change leads at centre of arena.
  8. Begin a large circle to the right, but do not close circle. Run down right side of arena past centre marker and do a sliding stop at least 6 metres from the fence. Hesitate to show completion of pattern.

RANCH VERSATILITY REINING Pattern 5

Judge shall indicate with mandatory markers on arena wall the centre of the pattern and place markers on wall at least 15 metres from each end of arena.
Ride pattern as follows:

  1. Run past centre marker and do a sliding stop. Back to centre of arena or at least 3 metres. Hesitate.
  2. Complete four right spins. Hesitate
  3. Complete four and a quarter left spins. Hesitate. Horse to be facing left wall.
  4. Beginning on left lead, complete two circles to the left – the first one small and slow, the second one large and fast Change leads at centre of arena.
  5. Complete two circles to the right – the first one small and slow, the second one large and fast Change leads at centre of arena.
  6. Begin a large circle to the left, but do not close circle. Run up left side of arena past centre marker and do a left roll back at least 6 metres from wall.
  7. Continue back around the previous circle, but do not close circle. Run up left side of arena past centre marker and do a left rollback at least 6 metres from wall.
  8. Continue back around previous circle but do not close circle. Run up right side of arena past centre marker, and do a sliding stop at least 6 metres from wall. Hesitate to show completion of pattern.

REINING Pattern 1

  1. Run at speed to the far end of the arena past the end marker and do a left rollback – no hesitation
  2. Run to the opposite end of the arena past the end marker and do a right rollback – no hesitation.
  3. Run past centre marker and do a sliding stop. Back up to centre of arena or at least three metres. Hesitate.
  4. Complete four spins to the right. Hesitate.
  5. Complete four and one-quarter spins to the left so that horse is facing left wall. Hesitate
  6. Beginning on the left lead, complete three circles to the left: first circle large and fast, second circle small and slow, third circle large and fast. Change leads at centre of the arena.
  7. Complete three circles to the right: first circle large and fast, second circle small and slow, third circle large and fast. Change leads at centre of the arena
  8. Begin a large circle to the left but do not close the circle. Run straight up the right side of arena past centre marker and do a sliding stop at least six metres from wall. Hesitate to demonstrate completion of pattern.

REINING Pattern 2

Horse may walk or jog to the centre of arena. Horses must walk or stop prior to starting pattern. Begin at the centre of the arena facing the left wall.

  1. Beginning on the right lead, complete three circles to the right: the first circle small and slow, the next two circles large and fast. Change leads at the centre of the arena.
  2. Complete three circles to the left: the first circle small and slow, the next two circles large and fast. Change leads at the centre of the arena.
  3. Continue around previous circle to the right. At the top of the circle, run down the middle to the far end of the arena past the end marker and do a right rollback – no hesitation.
  4. Run up the middle to the opposite end of the arena past the end marker and do a left rollback – no hesitation.
  5. Run past the centre marker and do a sliding stop. Back up to the centre of the arena or at least three metres. Hesitate.
  6. Complete fours spins to the right. Hesitate.
  7. Complete four spins to the left. Hesitate to demonstrate the completion of the pattern.

REINING Pattern 3

1. Beginning, lope straight up left side of the arena, circle the top end of arena, and staying at least six metres from the walls, runs straight down the opposite or right side of the arena past centre marker and do a left rollback – no hesitation.

2. Continue straight up the right side of arena circle back around the top of arena, and staying at least six metres from the walls, run straight down the left side of arena past the centre marker and do a right roll back – no hesitation.

3. Continue up the left side of arena to centre marker. At the centre marker, the horse should be on the right lead. Guide the horse to the centre of the arena on the right lead and complete three circles to the right: the first two circles large and fast, the third circle small and slow. Change leads at the centre of the arena.

4. Complete three circles to the left: the first two circles large and fast, the third circle small and slow. Change leads in the centre of the arena.

5. Begin a large circle to the right but do not close this circle. Continue up the left side of the arena, circle the top of the arena, and staying at least six metres from the walls, run straight down the opposite or right side of the arena past the centre marker and do a sliding stop. Back up at leasty three metres. Hesitate.

6. Complete four spins to the right. Hesitate.

7. Complete four spins to the left. Hesitate to demonstrate completion of the pattern.

REINING Pattern 4

Horses may walk or jog to the centre of the arena. Horses must walk or stop prior to starting pattern. Begin at the centre of the arena facing the left wall.

  1. Beginning on right lead, complete three circles to the right: the first two larger and fast, the third circle small and slow. Stop at the centre of the arena. Hesitate.
  2. Complete four spins to the right. Hesitate.
  3. Beginning on left lead, complete three circles to the left: the first two circles large and fast; the third circle small and slow. Stop at the centre of arena. Hesitate
  4. Complete fours spins to the left. Hesitate.
  5. Beginning on the right lead, run a large fast circle to the right, change leads at the centre of the arena, run a large fast circle to the left, and change leads at the centre of the arena. (Figure 8)
  6. Continue around previous circle to the right. At top of circle, run down the middle to the far end of arena past end marker and do a right rollback – no hesitation.
  7. Run up the middle to the opposite end of the arena past the end marker and do a left rollback – no hesitation.
  8. Run past the centre marker and do a sliding stop. Back up to the centre of the arena at least three metres
  9. Hesitate to demonstrate completion of the pattern.

REINING Pattern 5

Horses may walk or jog to the centre of arena. Horses must walk or stop prior to starting pattern Begin at centre of the arena facing left wall.

  1. Beginning on the left lead, complete three circles to the left: first two circles large and fast, third circle small and slow. Stop at centre of arena. Hesitate.
  2. Complete four spins to the left. Hesitate.
  3. Beginning on right lead, complete three circles to the right: first two circles large and fast, third circle small and slow. Hesitate.
  4. Complete four spins to the right. Hesitate.
  5. Beginning on left lead, run a large fast circle to the left, change leads at centre of arena, run a large fast circle to the right, change leads at centre of arena. (figure 8)
  6. Continue around previous circle to the left but do not close this circle. Run up right side of arena past centre marker and do a right rollback at least 6 metres from wall – no hesitation.
  7. Continue around previous circle but do not close this circle. Run up left side of the arena past the centre marker and do a left rollback at least six metres from the wall – no hesitation
  8. Continue back around previous circle but do not close this circle. Run up the right side of arena past centre marker and do a sliding stop at least six metres from the wall. Back up at least three metres. Hesitate to demonstrate completion of pattern.

REINING Pattern 6

Horses may walk or jog to the centre of arena. Horses must walk or stop prior to starting pattern. Begin at the centre of the arena facing the left wall.

  1. Complete four spins to the right. Hesitate.
  2. Complete four spins to the left. Hesitate.
  3. Beginning on left lead, complete three circles to the left: the first two circles large and fast, the third circle small and slow. Change leads at the centre of the arena.
  4. Complete three circles to the right: the first two circles large and fast, the third circle small and slow. Change leads at the centre of the arena.

  1. Run past the centre marker and do a sliding top. Back up to the centre of the arena or at least 3 metres. Hesitate.

  3. Complete four and one-quarter spins to the left so that the horse is facing the left wall. Hesitate.
  4. Beginning on the right lead, complete three circles to the right: first two circles large and fast, third circle small and slow. Change leads at the centre of the arena.
  5. Complete three circles to the left: first circle small and slow, next two circles are large and fast. Change leads at centre of arena.
  6. Begin a large circle to the right but do not close this circle. Run down the right side of arena past the centre marker and do a left rollback at least 6 metres from the wall – no hesitation.
  7. Continue back around the previous circle but do not close this circle. Run down left side of arena past centre and do a right rollback at least 6 metres from the wall – no hesitation.

REINING Pattern 11

Horses must jog to the centre of the arena. Horses must walk or stop prior to starting pattern. Begin at the centre of the arena facing the left wall or fence.

  1. Complete four spins to the left. Hesitate
  2. Complete four spins to the right. Hesitate.
  3. Beginning on the right lead, complete three circles to the right; the first circle small and slow; the next two circles large and fast. Change leads at the centre of the arena
  4. Complete three circles to the left; the first circle small and slow; the next two circles large and fast. Change leads at the centre of the arena.
  5. Begin a large circle to the right, but do not close this circle. Run down the centre of the arena past the end marker and do a right rollback – no hesitation
  6. Run up the middle to the opposite end of the arena past the end marker and do a left roll back – no hesitation.
  7. Run past the centre marker and do a sliding stop. Back up to the centre of the arena or at least three metres. Hesitate to demonstrate completion of the pattern.

REINING Pattern 12
This pattern cannot be used at “AA”, State or National level

  1. Starting at centre marker make a large fast circle on the right lead.
  2. Draw the circle down to a small circle until you reach centre marker, stop
  3. Do a double spin to the inside of the small circle in the centre marker, at end of spins horse should be facing left wall – slight hesitation
  4. Begin on left lead and make a large fast circle
  5. Then a small circle, again drawing down to centre of arena, stop, no hesitation on these stops.
  6. Do a double spin to the inside of the circle, slight hesitation, horse to be facing left wall
  7. Take a right lead and make a fast figure eight over the large circles, close the eight and change leads.
  8. Run to far end of the arena past marker and do a left rollback
  9. Run to opposite end of the arena past marker and do a right rollback
  10. Run past centre marker and do a sliding stop. Hesitate
  11. Back over slide tracks
  12. Hesitate to sow completion of pattern

RWD Walk & Trot Hunt Seat Equitation

  1. Walk to first marker
  2. Trot serpentine around markers
  3. From last serpentine marker extend the trot down to the rail marker on the rail
  4. Stop.
  5. Walk away and follow instructions of ring steward.

RWD Walk, Trot, Canter Hunt Seat Equitation

  1. Walk from marker A to B
  2. Stop. Turn 90 degrees left, canter right lead to marker C
  3. Drop to posting trot right diagonal to marker D
  4. At D, canter left lead to C
  5. At C, drop to sitting trot, trot pass B
  6. Stop, turn 270 degrees to the left on the haunches. Extend trot to D left diagonal.
  7. Stop, back four steps, walk away and follow instructions of ring steward.

RWD Walk, Jog Western Horsemanship

  1. Walk around 1st marker to 2nd marker
  2. Take up a jog and continue around 3rd marker back to 2nd marker.
  3. Stop. Back 4 steps.

Be ready at A

  1. Walk approximately two strides from A

RWD Walk, Jog/Trot Train Pattern

  1. Enter arena, walk between two logs at the walk
  2. Walk over three poles on the ground.
  3. Walk to marker one (this can be a cone or labelled marker), pick up a jog and jog to marker two. Stop and back two steps.
  4. Walk to a barrel, circle it to the right, continue walking.
  5. Walk through chute, turn left and follow instructions of ring steward.

RWD Walk, Trot/Jog, Lope/Canter Trail

  1. Walk over logs
  2. Weave cones at the trot
  3. Continue trot over logs to “L”
  4. Walkthrough “L”
  5. Walk over bridge
  6. Trot to chute, stop or break to a walk, walk into chute, back out

SPORTING  Barrel

The contestant will run to barrel number 1, pass to the left of it, and complete an approximately 360 degree turn around it;
Then go to barrel number 2, pass to the right of it, and complete a slightly more than 360 degree turn around it; then go to barrel number 3, pass to the right of it, and do another approximately 360 degree turn around it;
Then sprint to the finish line, passing between barrel number 1 and 2.
This barrel course can also be run to the left

Figure of Eight

Start by crossing the centre line between the upright markers, turn around the second pole, cross over the centre line again between the markers, then around the first pole and run back across the finish line.

  1. Walk at least 4.5 metres from start cone to the first marker. Start jogging at first marker and jog over log.

  1. Start at end of arena. Run down middle past centre marker to a sliding stop. Back at least 3 metres to centre, ¼ turn left.
  2. Pick up right lead, large fast circle, then a small slow circle. Change leads at centre of arena.
  3. Circling to the left, complete a large fast circle, then a small slow circle. Change leads at centre of arena
  4. Start a circle to the right, but do not close this circle. Run around end of arena and down the side (approximately 6 metres from fence) past centre marker and come to a sliding stop.
  5. Complete 3½ spins to the right.
  6. Continue back down side and around end of arena to other side (approximately 6 metres from fence) past centre marker and come to a sliding stop.

  4. Complete 3½ spins to the right.

  6. Complete 3½ spins to the left.
  7. Run back to middle of the arena past the centre marker and come to a sliding stop. Back at least 3 metres. Hesitate to complete pattern
