Super Challenge 2007

If you were passing through Moonbi on Sunday you would have been forgiven for thinking there was a cattle stampede at the Rodeo Arena, a mini dust storm was created when 58 riders on their trusty Australian Quarter Horses competed in 16 events at the 2007 AQHA Timed Event Super Challenge.

Some of the biggest names in Rodeo doubled up from Scone Rodeo the night before to vie for their share of the massive prize pool. This event has really become an event for the whose who of rodeo to attend, without forgetting those who are just starting out and improving.

It provides an ideal opportunity for some of the greener competitors to compete at a prestigious event without feeling they are out of their league, this is made possible by running events for all status of competitor through the 3D event. It’s also the perfect opportunity for some of the more experienced Barrel Racers and Ropers to offer some advice to the up and coming who are the future of the industry.

Hauling all the way from Gundagai in Southern NSW paid off for Adele Edwards whose horse Rocs Rager was crowned as Super Horse after winning the prestigious Barrel Race Super Challenge Event ahead of Moree’s Tyrone Money Spider with Wendy Caban on board. Funnily enough these 2 horses were the only 2 to break the 16 second time bracket for the entire day, proof that impeccable breeding makes for a great barrel horse.

Adele winning the Super Challenge has allowed for History not to be altered, never has this event been won by the same person or horse twice, this challenge will now move on to 2008, maybe Adele can make it a double.

“Wattalion” really showed the Classic Horses how it’s done… Consistently running 17 second drums allowed this 6 Year Old Chestnut Gelding and his aggressive rider Maree Oddy to win not only 2 rounds of the Classic but also to take out the Aggregate. Hanging on to Maree's shirt tales was Muswellbrook’s Liz McKinley on Notgointa Heaven whose consistency also paid off allowing them to walk away with a healthy cheque.

With 34 Entries and 3 runs per entry there was no doubt that the 3D event featured heavily in the program… Tamworth Local Shona Tribe rode Miss Cool Bar to win the first division in front of her close friend Julie Campbell on Miss Cinder Sue, both these horses were sired by Cactus Bar a well known stallion throughout the Barrel Racing Traps that was owned by Casey & Shona until its passing 2003.

Adele doubled up from her Super Challenge win to take out the 2nd Division on Traditional Nerfertiti, a horse that has not only a “come and look at me” presence but breeding to match, out of a Morn Deck mare by Traditional Roc the exact same breeding as Rocs Rager the winning Super Challenge horse. Bred at Tyrone Quarter Horses but now owned and ridden by Riana Fitzgerald, Tyrone Lightning Jack will make his way home to Dubbo with second place under his belt.

Bangtail Mojo is by the cutting sire Bomber Doc and his dam is the daughter of the infamous Hank Man Leo. Combined with Wendy Caban this pair are explosive and showed us that by winning the 3rd division in front of Charles in Charge and the curly blonde locks of Youth competitor Emmalene Deaves. 3rd Division is by far the hardest with 17 other competitors all vying for that 3 piece buckle set.

You have never seen a smile until you see the smile on young Jonty Raaens face during the presentation when he was awarded his first buckle for winning the under 13 barrel race on Power of One ahead of Tamworth Local Cowgirl Eliza Stevenson who scooted as fast as she has ever ridden around the drums on Hickorys Playboy.

Amanda Watson steered Freckles Little Chickasha through the clover leaf patter to win not only the 8 – 13 years barrel race but also the High Point Quarter Horse of the day title. Small in statue but huge in heart Brittany McVicar mounted Willebrich Note with her broken foot and rode as hard as her sore foot would spur to take out runner up.

Not to be forgotten were the Ropers, consisting of Team Roping, Break Away Roping and Rope & Tie who made it a real spectators sport.

Wendy Caban on Waradale Spider Man added another notch to her belt for the day winning the Breakaway Roping with a scorching time of 2.9 ahead of Tamworth’s own long time AQHA member Phillipa Leys on Hickory Bay.

Stock contractor and all round nice guy Greg Frewin rode Preacher Black to win the Rope & Tie by a long way in front of Moonbi’s own local hero Ben Smith and My Son Trumpet.

Not to let the disappointment of 2nd place get him down Ben backed up and showed this small community why he is there hero by winning the heavily contested Team Roping Heeling event in front of Docs Ellie May and Ronald Ramsay formally of the big smoke now also of Tamworth.

Troy O’Neile is another Moonbi Local and he had no intentions of letting his younger comrade Ben take all the home town glory, he mounted Fancy a Dance and made his mark in the Team Roping Heading with a credible 8.96 seconds ahead of his other mate Mick Hockley and Darts Macho Player.

A big Thank You must be extended to our sponsors, 2TM 92.9fm, Country Energy, Buenos Trailers with out your support events like these would not be possible.

A good day was had by both competitors and spectators alike. A great way to spend Mothers Day despite the dust, and the drought and everyone will be looking forward to the AQHA Timed Event Super Challenge 2008.
