Procedure for Registering an Imported Horse
(Updated February 2008)
1. The owner must be a financial member of the AQHA in either a full or constituent membership.
2. The following must be provided to the AQHA:
A copy of the international registration certificate (must have 3 consecutive AmQHA numbered parents on both sides).
An AQHA Application for Registration. Use a generic application form but tick the Imported Horse Registration box. These forms are available on our website. To obtain an Application for Registration click here
DNA test results. If the horse has been DNA tested outside of Australia, then a copy of the DNA genetic markers is required in addition to the DNA number. Otherwise, a DNA test will need to be done here in Australia. DNA kits can be purchased from the AQHA office. DNA kits cannot be issued until an application for registration has been received. For more info about DNA click here.
HYPP test results. Only horses with N/N (Negative) results will be accepted. The test must be carried out by a registered vet on Australian soil even if the horse has already been HYPP tested overseas (Rule 12.14 c). HYPP kits can be obtained from the AQHA office, however you will be billed by the testing lab once the analysis is completed. HYPP kits cannot be issued until an application for registration has been received. For more info about HYPP click here.
HERDA test results. Only horses with N/N (Negative) results will be accepted. Effective 1 January 2008, any horses purchased or embryos harvested overseas after 31 December 2007 must be tested for HERDA by 31 March 2008. Any horse testing positive to HERDA (N/Hr or Hr/Hr) will not be eligible for AQHA registration.
Shipping docket showing date of arrival in Australia.
PLEASE NOTE: DNA kits come as part of the imported horse registration fee and HERDA testing kits are $55 including GST and are an additional cost to the registration fee. HYPP kits can be obtained from the AQHA office but the payment for these will be billed directly to the member by the testing lab upon completion of the analysis. Genetic testing kits cannot be issued until an application for registration has been received by AQHA with payment.
3. For stallions, an Initial Breeding Fee (IBF) inspection must also be carried out by a veterinarian prior to any services taking place. Download and complete the Initial Breeding Fee (IBF) Inspection Certificate (PDF - 97KB). The IBF payment and form must have been received by AQHA and processed prior to the stallion being used for services or the stallion owner will be hit with the IBF penalty fee of $2200.
To avoid delays in processing, please check current fees prior to lodging your paperwork.
PLEASE NOTE: A penalty of $100 will be applied where applications for registration are received more than 90 days after the horse arrives in Australia.
To minimise vet fees, it is advisable to obtain both a HYPP kit and the IBF vet inspection form (where applicable) PRIOR to calling out your vet.
