Stallion Breeding Return (Updated February 2008)
The AQHA has now implemented a new process for stallion owners to lodge breeding returns which will simplify the process greatly.
For services after 31 December 2006 need to be on a new Stallion Return Book or will not be accepted.
Please note: If you are the owner of a Classified or IBF endorsed breeding sire and do not yet have a new Stallion Return book to lodge services with the Association, please contact the office as soon as possible.
AQHA will replace your old Breeding Certificate book with a new Stallion Return book if there is more than 50% of the old book remaining. Please ensure you have removed completed pages for your records prior to sending your old book into AQHA for replacement.
If you have used more than 50% of your old book, you will have to purchase the new Stallion Return book for $15.
The new breeding return books consist of 25 pages for Registered mare services and 10 pages for Foundation mare services.
The Registered mare return sheets will allow stallion owners to lodge 10 services per sheet and the Foundation mare return sheets will allow 4 services per sheet, this is because we still require the full markings for services to AQHA recorded foundation mares.
Each line requires the same information as the old system, except the drawing of the markings. The fees will remain as they are with each line representing one service. The fees will depend on the date the breeding return is received.
Please note breeding return books are allocated specifically to the particular stallion and are not to be used for any other stallion. Once the breeding returns are lodged, an Application for Registration with the stallion’s name, mare’s name and dates of service will be generated.
The Application for Registration will be forwarded to the stallion owner. The stallion owner then signs the Stallion Owner's Declaration and forwards it to the mare owner once all commercial obligations are met. If a mare owner still owes money on a service fee, agistment etc, DO NOT SIGN THE STALLION OWNERS DECLARATION until all commercial obligations have been met.
Once the foal is born the owner of the foal will be required to complete the rest of the details on the Application for Registration including owner’s name, colour, name, sex, markings, date of birth, sign the application then forward it to the AQHA along with the appropriate registration fee.
We will accept the old Breeding Certificates (pink and yellow copies) until 31 December 2006. After this date the new Stallion Breeding Returns must be used for all new services.
We will accept Applications for Registration with the old Breeding Certificates, where the service occurred prior to 31 December 2006.

From 1st August 2005 the AQHA requires full three way DNA parent validation for all new registrations. Once an Application for Registration is received, a DNA kit for the horse being registered will be forwarded to the owner for a DNA sample to be taken and forwarded for testing. Once the DNA result and parent validation is completed by the University of Queensland the registration process can be completed and a Certificate of Registration issued for the horse.
If you have any questions about the breeding return or registration process, please contact AQHA on (02) 6762 6444 or send us an email.
Please be aware that the Rules & Regulations of the Association changed on 1 August 2006 in regard to recording Foundation Mares with AQHA, to assist in maintaining the integrity of the Quarter Horse breed.
Persons wishing to register progeny out of a mare not eligible for Appendix (A) or Stud Book (Q) registration with AQHA must first apply to have their mare recorded as a Foundation Mare.
To apply to have a mare recorded as Foundation, members must comply with the following:
- Supply full pedigree details and a copy of a Registration Certificate from an approved breed Association for such mare. AQHA recognise Registered Australian Stud Book Thoroughbred (ASB), Arabian (AHSA) and Australian Stock Horse (ASHS) registered mares.
- The mare must be DNA typed.
- The mare must undergo testing for genetic disorders (HERDA, OLWS and HYPP).
- An AQHA Application for Registration must be lodged for such mare marked as “Foundation Recording”. These are available off the AQHA website at www.aqha.com.au or from the office.
The fees for genetic testing are outlined below. Please note that if your mare has been DNA typed through the Australian Stud Book (ASB), Arabian Horse Society of Australia (AHSA) or the Australian Stock Horse Society (ASHS), you will not have to DNA test your mare again through AQHA.
DNA test kit – $110.00 from AQHA
OLWS test kit – $90.00 from AQHA
HERDA kit – $55 from AQHA
HYPP test kit – Invoiced by the testing lab upon completion of the analysis (approximately $40.00)
Once AQHA receive all the relevant paperwork, a DNA profile plus negative HERDA, OLWS and HYPP results, AQHA will be in a position to accept your mare as a Foundation Mare. Your mare will then be issued with a Foundation Mare (FM) number. Progeny will be ineligible for registration until the mares Foundation recording is finalised.
