Registry Services
Initial Breeding Fee (IBF)
(Updated February 2008)

Effective 1 January 2008 all stallions registered with AQHA as approved breeding sires (IBF endorsed or AQHA classified) will be required to have their HERDA status on record with the Association and printed on their Certificate of Registration by 31 July 2008.  Any breeding sire without HERDA testing having been completed by this date may have Stallions Returns held or have their registration suspended form 1 August 2008 until testing has been carried out.  AQHA is in the process of putting HERDA results up on the online stud book for all Classified or IBF approved breeding sires.  Results for colts, fillies, geldings or breeding mares will not be advertised at this point, however members can chose to have the result printed on their horses Certificate of Registration if they wish.

Effective 1 January 2008 all new colts and stallions going through the IBF process for the first time will be required to have HERDA testing done before they will be accepted as a breeding sire with the Association.  HERDA kits need to be paid for with the lodgement of the IBF inspection certificate and fee.  They are available from the office for $55 inc GST.

Stallion and mare owners need to be aware that a stallion must be approved as a breeding sire by the Association prior to the service of any mares.  The Rules & Regulations covering this approval can be found in Regulation 15.1 in Section 2 of AQHA’s Official Handbook.

This process is part of AQHA’s commitment to protecting the integrity of the breed by ensuring that approved breeding sires do not pass on disqualifying characteristics to their progeny.

Initially, breeding sires were classified by the Association, but since 1 august 1994 stallions seeking breeding approval have been required to have a DNA type on file and be inspected by a registered veterinarian, to ensure that they meet the requirements prior to breeding.

Please note: As of 1 August 2005, all Foundation Sires must also undergo this procedure to have their progeny eligible for registration with AQHA.

The process is quite simple, the stallion owner is required to have their stallion/s examined by a Certified Veterinarian who will complete a Certificate of Examination for IBF.

The Certificate of Examination includes a statement which the Veterinarian must sign, that certifies that the stallion in question does not have:

  • an umbilical hernia

  • parrot mouth (overshot or undershot as defined by the Australian Association of Equine Practitioners)

  • is not cryptorchid or monorchid and that it has two (2) visible testicles descended into the scrotum, and;

  • meets or exceeds the minimum height requirement of 142 cm (14hh).

Stallions must also have undergone DNA typing and HERDA testing to be eligible for approval as a breeding sire.  DNA typing and HERDA testing kits are available from AQHA on receipt of a written request and payment.  DNA typing kits are $110.00 inc. GST and HERDA testing kits are $55 inc. GST.  If you are unsure it would be best to confirm that the stallion has not been DNA typed previously as part of the registration process.  If you are yet to register your colt with AQHA, then a DNA typing kit will come as part of your registration fee.

IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE that the IBF process must have been completed and that the stallion’s registration papers have endorsed PRIOR TO THE FIRST SERVICE TAKING PLACE

The following is a checklist of what is required to complete the process:

  • The stallion’s original Registration Certificate.

  • Confirmation that the stallion’s DNA type is on file with the Association (Regulation 13.10)

  • Confirmation that HERDA testing has been carried out on the stallion

  • Where required, the results of any scientific tests for genetic disorder/s is on file with the Association (Regulation 13.11)

  • A fully completed Certificate of Examination which contains the signed statement by a registered veterinarian in relation to the horse identity and conformation.

  • The appropriate Initial Breeding Fee which is currently $550.00

Please Note: If a stallion has served mares prior to the completion of the approval process, the resulting progeny will be ineligible for registration until the stallion and any progeny meet all requirements for registration and a penalty fee paid, currently $2,200.00.

Once a stallion has completed the process and is an approved breeding sire, the owner will be issued with a Breeding Return book for use to record services to that stallion ONLY.

Breeding Returns are to be lodged annually for each eligible service according to Regulations 20.9, 20.10 and 20.11 (Section 2) of AQHA Official Handbook.  Penalty fees will apply for late lodgement.

Also Please Note: If Breeding Returns are not lodged in accordance with the Rules & Regulations and/or become more than 12 months overdue, the stallion’s registration will be suspended immediately the Association becomes aware of any irregularity and a penalty fee of $1,100.00 will be paid and any returns bought up to date prior to the suspension being lifted.

Mare owners are advised to check with the Association to confirm that the stallion they plan to breed with has had his IBF paid. This ensures that once the mare has foaled that you have a registrable foal. Foals can be out of foundation mares but can not have lineage to Paint, Pinto, Appaloosa, Standard-bred, Heavy Draught or Pony breeding. There are other breeds which are also not acceptable. Please contact the office for confirmation prior to breeding your mare.

The following dates are the breeding dates to which paperwork needs to be lodged before late
fees apply:

  • If a mare is served between 1 August and 28 February, lodge a Stallion Breeding Return by 31 May.

  • If a mare is served between 1 March and 31 July, lodge a Stallion Breeding Return by 31October.

  • If a mare runs with the stallion for a full year (i.e. 12 months) the service dates on the Stallion Breeding Return should be from 1 August to 31 July of the following year, and should be lodged by 31 October.
