Artificial Insemination - Mare Owner's Guidelines
Updated NOVEMBER 2010
Artificial Insemination using Cooled/Frozen on farm or Cooled/Frozen transported semen will be accepted by the AQHA subjectto the following:
Mare Guidelines:
The procedure of Artificial Insemination (AI) is deemed an act of veterinary science under the relevant State Acts andtherefore can only be performed by a registered Veterinarian or Accredited Technician.
However some states do allow for people who have undergone training to perform the procedure on their own horses. Because ofthe complexity of the procedure the AQHA recommends that the members engage qualified veterinarians or technicians.
Any person or breeding establishment planning to inseminate a mare should contact the AQHA to verify the stallion hascompleted the IBF process and is an approved breeding sire.
Artificial Insemination using Cooled/Frozen on farm or Cooled/Frozen transported semen will be accepted by the AQHA subjectto the following:
Any person planning to breed their mare to a stallion artificially should ensure that the stallion has first completed the
IBF process and is established as a breeding sire with the AQHA.
The Stallion and Mare’s DNA must be on file with the AQHA.
Unless permitted by relevant State Law, the person carrying out the collection procedure of semen ideally must be either a registered Veterinarian or an Accredited Technician.
Stallion owners should be aware that the person carrying out the insemination procedure must ideally be either a registered
Veterinarian or an Accredited Technician. AQHA understands that some members have undergone training to perform AI procedures in the normal course of running their studs.
A stallion return for each service must be lodged with the AQHA and must clearly indicate the breeding was by artificial insemination. This is the stallion owner’s responsibility and the application for registration will be forwarded from the stallion owner. The mare owner should receive this from the stallion owner prior to the foal’s birth.
If the mare was served between 1st August to 28th February the stallion return needs to be lodged by 31st May.
If the mare was served between 1st March to 31st July the stallion return needs to be lodged by 31st October.
PLEASE NOTE: As of 1 August 2007 mare enrolment for Embryo Transfer has been abolished, so where a mare is part of an ET program with AI, no paperwork is required by AQHA for the mare.
