Guide for Importing Semen

GUIDELINES FOR STALLIONS BASED OVERSEAS ENROLLING FOR SHIPMENT OF COOLED SEMEN

1. The stallion owner must at all times adhere to the rules of both the American Quarter Horse Association (AmQHA) and the Australian Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) in relation to Artificial Insemination and transported cooled semen.

2. The stallion owner must be a financial member of the AQHA in either a full or constituent membership.

3. The stallion must be enrolled for AI each year 30 days prior to the first collection.

4. The following must be provided to the AQHA:

A copy of the international registration certificate (must have 3 consecutive AmQHA numbered parents on both sides).

An AQHA Application for Registration.  Use a generic application form but tick the Imported Horse Registration box.  These forms are available on our website.  To obtain an Application for Registration click here

DNA test results. If the horse has been DNA tested outside of Australia, then a copy of the DNA genetic markers is required in addition to the DNA number. Otherwise, a DNA test will need to be done here in Australia. DNA kits can be purchased from the AQHA office. DNA kits cannot be issued until an application for registration has been received.  For more info about DNA click here.

HYPP test results. Only horses with N/N (Negative) results will be accepted. HYPP kits can be obtained from the AQHA office, however you will be billed by the testing lab once the analysis is completed. HYPP kits cannot be issued until an application for registration has been received.  For more info about HYPP click here.

HERDA test results.  Only horses with N/N (Negative) results will be accepted.  Effective 1 January 2008, any horses purchased or embryos harvested overseas after 31 December 2007 must be tested for HERDA by 31 March 2008.  Any horse testing positive to HERDA (N/Hr or Hr/Hr) will not be eligible for AQHA registration.  Only HERDA testing facilitated through AQHA will be accepted.

PLEASE NOTE: DNA kits come as part of the imported horse registration fee and HERDA testing kits are $55 including GST and are an additional cost to the registration fee.  HYPP kits can be obtained from the AQHA office but the payment for these will be billed directly to the member by the testing lab upon completion of the analysis.  Genetic testing kits cannot be issued until an application for registration has been received by AQHA with payment.

5. Once all paperwork is complete and all payments received, the stallion will be issued a registration number and the stallion owner will be provided with a breeding certificate book.  Normal lodgment fees will apply to breeding certificates.

All forms are available from the AQHA office or download from our forms area.

DNA kits can also be purchased from the AQHA office.

To avoid delays in processing, please check our current fees prior to lodging your paperwork.
