Chickeramic (IMP) Q-337 - Profound Influence On The Australian Quarter Horse Scene
Chickeramic was inducted into the AQHA Hall of Fame in September 2003 in recognition of his profound influence on the Quarter Horse scene in Australia due to the number of outstanding progeny sired by him.
Yulgibar Stud selected this stallion for his bloodlines and potential to breed Quarter Horses with ability, movement and good temperament. Chickeramic is by Triple Chick (sire of 9 AAAT, 50 AAA and 20 AA rated winners in the USA with earnings in excess of $550,726) and out of the mare, Tabano Star, herself an American Champion.
When Yulgibar purchased Chickeramic from American breeder Ms J.L. Bivins in 1968 they could not have foreseen the effect this stallions would have on the Australian Quarter Horse industry. Chickeramic was introduced to some of the best station mares and King Ranch foundation stock which proved a recipe for success. Chickeramic’s progeny carry the blood of most all important foundation sires and highlight the strength of the King Ranch imported horses and their influence on the establishment of the Australian Quarter Horse.
The proof of a sire is not the final points tally, although Chickeramic has featured for many years in the Leading Sire Lists and has been at the top as the Leading Sire. A stallion should not be judged or rated by numbers or figures but rather by the quality of the company and level of the competition during their career.
Chickeramic sired 177 AQHA registered progeny and among them some of the bester halter and performance horses that this country has ever seen. Many of our youth and amateurs have been to winning performances by a Chickeramic horse. One of the tests of the quality of progeny of any stallion is the number of professionals who choose to campaign them. Chickeramic progeny have stood at the head of the line up the most of the major Futurities, Derbies, Features, Championships and have accumulated countless High Point Titles for owners and riders.
Chickeramic’s sons and daughters became admired for their ability and versatility and were a delight to watch in action as they excelled in all fields of competition. Their working qualities can be well remembered, Yulgibar Jessie James P8288 who was ridden to many win in Cow Horse Events by Sid Myer and also the great buckskin performer Yulgibar Quicksilver Q-10032 (pictured) both stamping the word “versatility” on Chickeramic breeding. One American judge at the AQHA National Show was heard to remark “I can’t believe what I saw, that buckskin sucker won a Pleasure and a Trail yesterday and has just gone out and roped a cow… and hell, he’s only got one eye!”
Owned for many years by the Cotterill family, Yulgibar Quicksilver passed away in October 2003. Silver was purchased as a two year old from Elgee Park in 1984 and was trained by Dick and Trish Fuchs ultimately accumulating 1323.5 AQHA lifetime points. Amongst his 29 AQHA awards are Silver Century in Trail. Bronze Century in Reining, Performance Medal, Bronze Century in Halter, Champion Youth Horse in Performance, Superior Horse in Western Pleasure, Register of Merit in General Performance and Register of Merit in Working Cowhorse, his favourite event. Judy Cotterill says her greatest highlight with Silver was winning High Point Western Riding Horse of Australia. Other great achievements include the Greg Lougher Perpetual Reining Trophy and being crowned overall High Point Reining Horse of Australia. Photo: Yulgibar Quicksilver. With a Silver Century in Western Pleasure, A Bronze Century in Trail, Bridle Path Hack and Hunter Under Saddle, Blue Peter was no slouch in the show ring. Well known Victorians Tania and Andrew Soper had many pleasurable years with Blue Peter, competing as Youth and winning many State and National Titles between them.
Blue Peter was later purchased by the Turner family who also enjoyed many years of fun with him. He is now 24 years old and lives in retirement with Rick Platenkamp and Helen.

The grand old couple, Chick and Dixie spent their final years at Elgee Park. Sadly, Chickeramic outlived Dixie by a few years and died himself in December 2003 at the ripe old age of 35!
