Requirements
To be eligible an AQHA Member needs to be 50 years of age or older and have not within the previous three years:
a) Exhibited a horse owned by someone other than myself or my immediate family member*, for remuneration**.
b) Trained a horse owned by someone other than myself or my immediate family member*, for remuneration**.
c) Assisted in training a horse owned by someone other than myself or my immediate family member*, for remuneration**.
d) Instructed a person in riding, driving, training, or showing a horse either directly or indirectly for remuneration**.
* "Immediate family member" means the applicant's spouse, child, stepchild, legal ward, father, mother, step-parent, sister, brother, grandparent, grandchild or legal guardian.
** "Remuneration" means payment of money or other consideration for a service or benefit. Under AQHA rules, prize money is not to be considered remuneration, but payment of entry fees, expenses etc, by any person other than the contestant or the contestant's family member as stated above is considered remuneration.
How to become A Select Amateur
This procedure outlines how to become a Select Amateur of the Australian Quarter Horse Association.
Step 1: Refer to the the Requirements above to check your eligibility.
Step 2: Complete and sign an Application for Select Amateurs:
a) If you did not have Select Amateur Endorsement in 20010/11 but wish to apply for in
2011/12, please renew your Membership Online.
b) If you are unable to renew online, please download an Application for a Select
Amateur Endorsement.
Step 3: Check the current fee here.
Please note that the AQHA Membership year runs from August 1 - July 31.
Step 4: If you are unable to renew online send the fully completed and signed Application to

Select Amateur AQHA Approved Events
Select Amateur is a class for Amateurs that are over 50 years of age; to be eligible you must hold a current AQHA Select Amateur Endorsement.

There are eight AHQA approved Select Amateur events.

Select Western Pleasure
* Select Hunter Under Saddle
* Select Showmanship
*
Select Western Horsemanship
*
Select Hunt Seat Equitation
*
Select Western Riding
*
Select Reining
The full range of events came into effect on the 1st August 2008.
These classes are mandatory at National, State level and AA (Showmanship, Western Pleasure, Trail & Hunter Under Saddle at AA Shows) and optional for A approved shows.
We suggest you lobby and support your local Affiliates for them to run the classes at the smaller shows.
Please note: The AQHA Rules and Regulations state that a Select Amateur riding in Open classes can only ride their own horse and horses owned by their immediate family members.
